Former Tennessee head coach Butch Jones has interest in the job opening at Maryland, according to a report from TerrapinSportsReport.com. The website is citing a source close to Jones.

The news of Jones’ interest comes just a day after Maryland fired Durkin as the team’s head coach. Durkin had originally been reinstated at his position, following the recommendation from the board of regents.

The decision to retain Durkin was met with severe backlash from media, students, parents and even players. President Wallace Loh opted to part ways with the Terrapins head coach after the response.

Durkin had been on administrative leave since Aug. 11 while the program’s culture was being investigated. He was 10-15 in two seasons. He didn’t coach a game for the Terrapins this season.

Matt Canada has been the interim head coach and has guided the Terps to a 5-3 record.

Jones is currently an offensive analyst at Alabama. He was fired as the head coach at Tennessee in November 2017. He was 34-27 in five seasons with the Volunteers.

In his final season, Jones was fired following a 4-6 start to the season and an 0-6 record in SEC play. Jones also had coaching stops at Central Michigan and Cincinnati. Overall, he’s posted an 84-54 record and taken his teams to eight bowl games in 11 seasons.

Canada is still the interim head coach.
