Cade McNamara and JJ McCarthy remain locked in a battle for the starting quarterback role at Michigan. In Week 1, it was McNamara under center to start the game, but McCarthy will get a shot to start in Week 2.
After the game, McNamara addressed Jim Harbaugh’s plan for the QB position. He admitted the plan was “unusual” and that the decision for McCarthy to get a start was unexpected.

“I would definitely say it’s pretty unusual,” said McNamara. “It was a kind of thing I wasn’t really expecting. At the end of camp, I thought I had put myself in a good position.”
McNamara finished his time in Week 1 going 9-for-18 passing the ball for 136 yards and a touchdown. He also had a near interception that was eventually waved off after review.
For what it’s worth, head coach Jim Harbaugh has continually spoken positively about McNamara and his play, even after the final result from the win over Colorado State. We’ll see if that changes after Week 2 and McCarthy’s turn as the starter.
