Cade McNamara remains sidelined with Iowa just 2 weeks away from the season opener. Fortunately, the outlook for the quarterback to return to the field soon is positive.

On Friday, the Big Ten Network made a stop in Iowa City as a part of the network’s bus tour. During that stop, BTN analyst Dave Revsine reported from the field on the status of the QB position.

According to Revsine, McNamara and Joe Labas were both out today. Deacon Hill — a transfer from Wisconsin — took the No. 1 reps Friday.

Revsine also reported that the Hawkeyes are “hopeful” McNamara will be back next week. While that’s far from a concrete outlook, it sounds like McNamara is progressing in his recovery.

McNamara was injured in Iowa’s scrimmage last weekend in a non-contact situation. The good news is head coach Kirk Ferentz labeled the injury a muscle situation with McNamara avoiding a blow to his surgically repaired knee that ended his 2022 season at Michigan.

With McNamara under center, the Hawkeyes stand to be competitive in the B1G West and in the Big Ten Championship odds. Without the former Michigan starter, Iowa would likely struggle to keep up in what should be a deep division.
