Caitlin Clark is already the best player in women’s college basketball heading into the 2023-24 season. After a record-breaking performance a season ago, Clark is back to lead Iowa during her fourth year with the program.
Due to the extra year of eligibility the NCAA awarded for the COVID season, Clark will actually have a major decision on her hands at the season’s end. The star guard can either elect to leave for the 2024 WNBA Draft or spend a fifth season in Iowa City.
At Wednesday’s media day, Clark was asked about that looming decision. She admitted it feels somewhat similar to her high school recruiting process but will ultimately just go with her gut.
“I guess the biggest thing for myself is just I am going to go based off my gut. At the end of the day, I think that’s the biggest thing I should trust is I’m going to know when I need to know if i want to stay or if I want to go,” said Clark. “I think it was very similar to my college decision. It feels weird, I feel like I’m in the recruiting process in a way again, but to a lower extent.”
As for her current mindset, Clark said she’s focused on her team and the upcoming season and knows the decision will come when she needs it.
“It’s really not something I think about every single day. It’s not something I let weigh on me. I’m focused on helping this team be the best team they can be, and when I know that decision, all of you will know,” Clark said. “I think the biggest thing is I’m just gonna trust my gut, I’m not going to do research and find what’s better and all this stuff and find data. I’m just gonna trust my gut and go with that.”
We will see what Clark ultimately decides down the road, but she is already an Iowa legend and future superstar in the WNBA.
