Cal will be without one of its best defensive players when it suits up against Illinois in the Redbox Bowl.
Head coach Justin Wilcox said that senior defensive back Ashtyn Davis will miss the postseason due to an unspecified injury. Davis had to undergo a procedure and will not be at full strength for the Redbox Bowl matchup on Dec. 30.
“Ashtyn had to have a procedure done,” Wilcox said. “It’s a minor procedure, but it’s something he had to have done. It’s something small, but it had to be done.”
Davis was one of the top defensive backs in the Pac-12 during his senior season, earning second-team All-Pac-12 honors at the end of the year. In 11 games this year, Davis recorded 57 tackles, four pass break-ups, two interceptions and two forced fumbles. He was also used as a return specialist throughout the season.
Davis will end his Cal career with 171 tackles, 12 pass break-ups and seven interceptions, including a pick-six.
Cal finished the season with a 7-5 record and defeated Stanford and UCLA in the final two games of the season. Davis did not play against the Cardinal.
Illinois enters the Redbox Bowl with a 6-6 record and dropped its final two games to Iowa and Northwestern.
