Cam Rising is reportedly set to embark on a new chapter of his football life.
On the same day that the former Utah star quarterback medically retired from the sport, Rising was already set to become the offensive coordinator at his alma mater, Newbury Park High School in California. Rising’s move to coaching was reported by On3 on Wednesday afternoon.
There is a Big Ten and Michigan connection to Rising’s decision because Newbury Park High School is home to Wolverines 2026 quarterback commit Brady Smigiel. This means that Rising is slated to be Smigiel’s offensive coordinator this fall before he heads to Ann Arbor next year.
Rising led Utah to back-to-back Pac-12 titles in 2021 and 2022 before a devastating knee injury in the Rose Bowl following the 2022 season forced Rising to sit out the entire 2023 season. Rising, who redshirted at Texas during his lone season in Austin in 2018 before heading to Utah, attempted a comeback last season but only played in 3 games.
He suffered yet another injury early last season, this time to his hand, before another knee injury ended his season in Week 7. Rising didn’t blame the numerous knee injuries for his medical retirement though, instead pinning it on the freak hand injury he sustained.
Now, it appears that Rising is putting all of that heartache behind him as he goes back to his high school alma mater to run its offense. He’ll have a prized quarterback to coach in Smigiel, who is a 4-star recruit, the 80th-ranked player in the Class of 2026, the 7th-ranked quarterback and the 12th-rated player from the state of California, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.
