Carson Hinzman enters his second season in the Ohio State program and is among a number of young players fighting for playing time. He also recognizes the line has been a question mark for some this offseason, but he believes the unit is exceeding expectations in fall camp compared to a season ago.
“I think our offensive line now in terms of camp-wise, we’re exceeding expectations that we would have had last year,” said Hinzman. “I think people tend to doubt the o-line first — which is normal, I understand that — but the work we put in and the guys we’ve been able to develop in a short period of time, I think we’re going to be extremely strong.”
Asked what could make the difference for Ohio State, Hinzman said the offensive line needs just a little bit more time. However, the recent results on the field give Hinzman confidence that the Buckeyes can have a strong run, potentially even making a run at the Joe Moore Award as the nation’s best.
“We just need a little bit of time I think that going into this offseason and what we’ve been able to put on the field recently, we’ve been more than good enough, if not great,” said Hinzman. “I wouldn’t be surprised if we tried to take a run at the Joe Moore.”
As most fans are well aware, the Joe Moore Award resides in Ann Arbor for 2 years running. Michigan OC and offensive line coach Sherrone Moore has turned the Wolverine line into a formidable unit and reloaded that group via the transfer portal this offseason.
While Hinzman maintains confidence in his group, the front line of the Buckeyes will have to show they can maintain consistency this fall. But if the offensive line does shine, Ohio State’s offense will be tough to stop, even with a new quarterback under center.
