Casey Thompson was Nebraska’s starting quarterback for 2022, despite missing some time with an injury. And while new head coach Matt Rhule is adding former Georgia Tech QB Jeff Sims via transfer, Thompson has plans to return for 2023 as the starter.

Per On3 Sports, Charles Thompson — Casey’s father — revealed Monday evening that the QB plans to return to Lincoln for the 2023 season. He’s also returning with the mindset of being the starter once again.

“Listen, his thinking is he left the season as a starter and he expects to return and start next season,” Charles Thompson said. “That’s where his mindset is…

“There’s been no doubt what Casey is planning to do. The coaches have been fully aware of that. Everybody’s on the same page.”

The elder Thompson also discussed Casey Thompson’s shoulder surgery, indicating the QB was battling through an injury for most of the season. As of now, Thompson expects to be fully healthy in time for the summer.

The QB is also returning with the mindset that the starting job is his and is going to work toward that end:

“He’s coming back as if it is his job,” Charles Thompson said. “I know everybody likes to be excited about the new shiny penny or new shiny horse that entered the stable. But at the end of the day, Casey was a Cornhusker all last year. He ended the year on a high note and expects to return and do everything he can to help the program get to where it needs to be.”
