During interim head coach Mickey Joseph’s first win over Indiana — a B1G win at that — his quarterback showed a glimpse of the competitive spirit that had been lacking at Nebraska during Scott Frost’s tenure.

Joseph saw Casey Thompson battling various injuries that he had been dealing with throughout the season and opted to briefly take him out after a hit to his throwing shoulder in the second quarter, much to Thompson’s dismay.

Thompson revealed what he told Joseph in Monday’s press conference.

“I’m not coming off the field unless it’s a season-ending injury,” he said.

Though he hasn’t had the smoothest ride since coming to Lincoln, Thompson showed some serious heart in the midst of a difficult season, and that’s all an interim coach can ask for.

Thompson later came back in the game, eventually leading two scoring drives with a passing and rushing in the fourth quarter to put the Hoosiers away for good. The Cornhuskers now have an opportunity to get back to .500 in Week 6 against Rutgers.
