A former Michigan State defensive lineman said he was told not to come back to the program for the 2017 season.
Cassius Peat, a member of the Spartans’ 2015 recruiting class, told the Detroit Free Press that he was told not to return to the program, despite being admitted by the university and cleared through compliance.
“Morally, I didn’t think it was right,” Peat told the Detroit Free Press. “Four days before I was supposed to report, they just blindsided me and said I couldn’t come.”
After enrolling at Michigan State in 2015, Peat was redshirted his freshman season and left the program shortly before the 2016 season kicked off. He enrolled at Pima Community College in Arizona but planned on returning to East Lansing or signing with UCLA.
Peat visited Michigan State in December and confirmed that he planned on returning in March. But it looks like the former three-star defensive lineman will be exploring other options for his football and academic career.
“It’s beyond me why they would do that,” Peat said. “I was admitted by compliance and the university. I’m not sure exactly what’s going on with the program…I worked so hard in the year off, taking all these (course) hours. Even coming back on an official visit and, just four days before, they throw you to the curb.”
Michigan State’s 2015 class was ranked 22nd in the nation, according to 247Sports. Peat was ranked as the third-best player out of Arizona and was ranked No. 397 nationally.
