College Football Playoff expansion rumors have been gaining ground as of late. The news about the next format was released in a report from ESPN’s Pete Thamel.
It was reported that there may be a vote Wednesday. A decision has now been made by the CFP Board of Managers and the next format of the CFP will reportedly have 12 teams in it, according to Thamel. This could change the whole landscape of college football.
The 12-team model is expected to start in 2026, after the current contract, according to a source. There’s still a chance that it could go earlier, but those details are complicated and would take some time to work out. https://t.co/sRWlmiDvbe

ESPN’s deal with the CFP ends after the 2025 season. Thamel states that the format is supposed to take place in 2026, but could happen earlier.
It will be interesting to see how the CFP ends up working with 12 teams in it, instead of the 4 that fans haven’t gotten used to over the years, if this is true.
This could make the regular season lose some of its importance, as it could take less for a team to make it to the CFP. We’ll see what other details come about this report in the coming days.
