Changes could reportedly be coming to the College Football Playoff format. The presidents are meeting on Friday to determine when to expand per Ross Dellenger of Sports Illustrated.
Sources tell Sports Illustrated that expansion could be coming in 2026 or as early as 2024. The only way that expansion could happen in 2024, is if the board makes a unanimous decision. The current format has 4 teams.
There have been talks in the past of adding 2 more teams to it to get to 6. Expansion could even come in the form of a 12-team or 16-team playoff in the future as well. The clock is ticking as ESPN’s deal with the College Football Playoff expires after 2025.
The only B1G schools to have made the playoff since its debut in 2014 have been Michigan, Ohio State, and Michigan State. Both the Buckeyes and Wolverines could be primed for another return to the CFP, which could all come down to who wins “The Game”.
We’ll see if any more details come out about the meeting once the vote has happened.
