Chad Ryland’s record-tying FG streak for Maryland snapped in Week 5

Maryland kicker Chad Ryland was *this* close to making B1G history.
Against Michigan State, Ryland tied the B1G record with 24 consecutive made field goals. All that was needed was 1 more field goal, and Ryland’s name would be etched in B1G history.

Ryland got his chance, albeit on far from a gimme kick. Ryland missed a 50-yard field goal that would’ve broken the record and put the Terrapins up 27-13.
Nevertheless, this was still a very impressive stretch from Ryland. In an era where college kickers are historically unreliable, Ryland is an outlier. Ryland, who transferred to Maryland after 4 seasons at Eastern Michigan, finished last season with an 86.4% field goal percentage, much above average for college kickers.
He continued his dominance through this season, before ultimately falling 1 short of the record. Luckily for Ryland, Maryland seems to be well in control of the Spartans, maintaining a 27-13 lead.
