Chip Kelly reveals unlikely benefit assistant coaches have over head coaches

Chip Kelly, in addition to being one of the most brilliant offensive minds in football for many years, is simply a character. He hardly ever has a filter.

And in Tuesday’s weekly press conference, Ohio State’s offensive coordinator took a break from talking about the Xs and Os or dealing with Iowa’s tough defense this Saturday when he was asked what the best difference was between being a head coach and an assistant coach. Kelly, who’s been a head coach at the NFL and college levels, had a very, well, interesting answer.

“You can go to the bathroom between series if you have to. That’s about the only difference, I think,” said Kelly, who has clearly settled into his latest role as Buckeyes OC. “It’s always kind of tough. It would be very difficult (on the sideline) to say, ‘Hey, I’m going to leave.’ But there’s a bathroom upstairs by the booth if need be.”

Now that Buckeye Nation has all that straight, it can digest (no pun intended) what Kelly’s routine might be like during a course of a Big Ten showdown when he’s busy calling offensive plays and trying to keep the 3rd-ranked Buckeyes undefeated.

You can call it one of the perks of Kelly’s job being in charge of all those offensive weapons at Ohio State.
