Former Ohio State standout Chris Olave is coming off an injury-shortened NFL campaign for the New Orleans Saints. Fortunately, it hasn’t diminished his trajectory with the program.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, GM Mickey Loomis announced that the Saints are picking up the 5th year rookie option for Olave. One of many first round picks from Ohio State, Olave was drafted No. 11 overall in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Olave began his NFL career with consecutive seasons of 1,000+ receiving yards. Unfortunately, multiple concussions limited him to just 8 games played last season, though he was still effective when on the field.

Based on performance alone, the move is not surprising. Olave has a career average of 65.8 yards per game in 39 career appearances across his first 3 seasons with New Orleans, including 10 receiving touchdowns. The Saints have used 6 different starting quarterbacks in Olave’s 3 seasons, adding a bit of significance to his performance.

The only concern at this point for Olave is the concussions he sustained last year, combined with one from earlier in his career. Hopefully, he can avoid them and remain one of the bright young receivers in the league today.

While at Ohio State, Olave twice led the Big Ten in receiving touchdowns (2019, 2021) and rewrote the Buckeye record books. He still ranks 3rd in receptions (176) and 3rd in yardage (2,711) while holding Ohio State’s all-time mark for receiving touchdowns with 35.
