C.J. Stroud is officially QB1 in Houston. The Texans have named Stroud their starting quarterback entering Week 1 of the 2023 NFL season.
Houston’s announcement came shortly after the team’s preseason finale, a 17-13 win over the New Orleans Saints. Stroud, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, was competing with Texans incumbent starter Davis Mills for the title of QB1.
Stroud saw a total of just 8 series across 3 preseason contests. He was just 2-of-4 in his debut on Aug. 10. Stroud had a stronger showing against Miami, going 7-of-12 in his second game.
On Sunday, Stroud was limited to just 2-of-4 passing, but his first touchdown pass in an NFL game was among the completions. Stroud found Nico Collins from 3 yards out in the 1st quarter.

Stroud will now look to throw touchdowns that count in his official NFL career stats. The 2-time first-team All-B1G selection recently told reporters that playing at Ohio State has him ready for the NFL.
The Texans open the 2023 season at Baltimore on Sept. 10. The game is set for a 1 p.m. ET kickoff, airing on CBS.
