The Sun Belt Championship Game between Coastal Carolina and Louisiana has been canceled due to COVID-19 issues with the Chanticleers.

As of now, it appears the solution will be to declare both teams co-champions of the Sun Belt for this season. Coastal currently has an 8-0 conference record while Louisiana is 7-1.

“We are very disappointed that the championship game cannot be played, but we are so proud of all of the players and staff members and their hard work during this truly challenging season,” Sun Belt Commissioner Keith Gill said in a statement. “We will honor both teams as 2020 Sun Belt Conference Co-Champions.”

However, Louisiana head coach Billy Napier doesn’t seem satisfied with that solution. He tweeted about making up the game late on Thursday night.

With the condensed bowl season, it’s tough to see when it would be possible to make this game up unless each team landed in a bowl game after New Years.

Speaking of, this cancelation may end up working out in Indiana’s favor. The Hoosiers are currently ranked No. 10 in the College Football Playoff rankings and could be in line for a NY6 bowl berth, depending on how things go this weekend. A Coastal Sun Belt Championship could have vaulted the No. 12 Chanticleers ahead of Indiana in the pecking order.
