Coaching carousel: former Michigan assistant is top candidate for FBS head coaching job, per report

The coaching carousel has started spinning earlier than it ever has this college football season. November rumors start picking up steam on which coaches might be headed to high-profile vacancies. And as the top schools try and find their next big thing, smaller schools are looking for some success.
Massachusetts, in that search, is looking to go back.
“Arizona DC Don Brown has emerged as the top candidate for the head coaching job at UMass,” according to Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports. “No announcement is imminent. Arizona plays Washington State on Friday night.”

Brown was the head coach of the Minutemen from 2004-2008 and then resigned to become the Maryland defensive coordinator. He was with Jim Harbaugh at Michigan in the same capacity from 2016-2020. Harbaugh let go of Brown after the Wolverines went 2-4 in the 2020 season.
Arizona is in its first year with head coach Jedd Fisch, who hired Don Brown to become the DC for the Wildcats. The Wildcats are 1-9 this season and 1-6 in Pac-12 play.
It would be the 4th FBS coach to be hired before the season even ends. Arizona goes on the road to Washington State Friday night at 9:00 p.m. ET on the Pac-12 Network. UMass (1-9) fired its head coach last week. The Minutemen play Army at noon ET on Saturday.
