It’s been a disaster season for the Dallas Cowboys, but it’s possible there’s some light at the end of the tunnel in the form of Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields.

At least that’s what Colin Cowherd thinks. On Wednesday, he laid out the scenario for the Cowboys to be in position to draft Fields with the No. 2 overall pick.

“Justin Fields is available,” Cowherd said. “Are we sure they pass on Justin Fields, who would be an No. 1 pick in any other draft that didn’t have Trevor Lawrence or Andrew Luck in it?Are we sure? You go look at that Dallas schedule. I don’t see a win, outside of maybe Washington.

“The Jets will have the first pick. I think its Dallas and the [Jaguars] for the second pick.”

The Cowboys will have Dak Prescott returning from injury next season, but he will soon require a longterm contract that would take up a significant portion of Dallas’ salary cap going forward. It’s possible Dallas could opt to pick Fields and hope they get similar production to Prescott at a discounted price.

Cowherd, like many other analysts, is high on Fields’ NFL potential.

“I don’t know you [pass on Fields],” Cowherd said. “He’s an A or A+ prospect, from a tradition power [program], who has 47 touchdowns and 3 picks and looks better this year than last, and last year he looked great. He’s big. He’s got an arm. He can move. Supposed to be a great kid.”
