Colin Cowherd weighs in on Jim Harbaugh rumors, what his departure would do to Michigan

Jim Harbaugh’s interest in a return to the NFL seems to have more traction than ever right now. After leading Michigan to a B1G title, it appears the head coach is looking into new opportunities pretty seriously.

It’s been reported that Harbaugh is having a second interview with the Minnesota Vikings, who are looking to hire a new head coach after parting ways with Mike Zimmer.

On Tuesday, Colin Cowherd chimed in the potential of Harbaugh leaving Michigan. He believes it will put the program in a really tough spot if he departs, especially on such short notice.

“My takeaway is, Michigan football cut his pay, not a great move, they’re a little trapped now. So, if Harbaugh left here in the next 4-5 days, Michigan would have no option. They would have to hire 38-year-old Josh Gattis, the offensive coordinator,” Cowherd said. “Never been a head coach. Is he ready? Most people are not at 38 to take over a brand as big as Michigan.

“That would also mean you’d need two new coordinators. All the good ones are mostly hired up. Also, some of these recruits came for Harbaugh. With the transfer portal, people would start poaching Michigan big time.”

After his most successful season in Ann Arbor, it’s interesting that Harbaugh is entertaining a return to the NFL this offseason. With Michigan still recruiting well, it feels like the program finally got over the hump.

Then again, Harbaugh’s opportunities to return to the NFL could be limited. It might be best to strike while the iron is hot.
