College Football Playoff announces R.C. Slocum’s replacement on selection committee

A former Michigan State football player and Washington, Notre Dame and Stanford head coach will be joining the College Football Playoff selection committee.
Wednesday afternoon, the College Football Playoff announced that Tyrone Willingham will be joining the selection committee. Executive Director Bill Hancock made the announcement.
This will be Willingham’s second run on the committee. He previously served in the role from 2014-17. He will replace R.C. Slocum, who has decided to step down because of health concerns.
Willingham will be on the committee for one year, closing out Slocum’s term.
“Everyone on the committee will miss R.C.,” Hancock said in a statement. “He has been a delightful colleague and a dedicated member, and he knows college football inside and out. We are also grateful to Tyrone for stepping in for the 2021 season to replace R.C. His previous time on the committee will make for a seamless transition.”
Willingham was a quarterback and wide receiver at Michigan State from 1973-76. He began his coaching career immediately following his time on the field with the Spartans and joined the MSU staff as a graduate assistant.
Willingham was the head coach at Stanford (1995-2001), Notre Dame (2002-04) and Washington (2005-08). He won 76 career games as a head coach and guided his teams to six postseason appearances.
“I am so appreciative of the invitation to rejoin the College Football Playoff selection committee,” Willingham said. “It is an honor to be asked back to such a distinguished group. I have nothing but great memories from my initial experience, and I look forward to working with the current members in 2021.”
