College football punter has already produced worst fake punt of 2022

It is Thursday night in Week 1 of the college football season. And yet, we already have the worst fake punt of the season, and that’s not a joke.
In Thursday’s action, UCF is hosting South Carolina State. Already trailing 7-0, SC State dialed up a fake punt on 4th-and-19 as the announcers are heard opining that it is probably not the right time for a fake.
What is even more remarkable, the call appeared to be working. The punter was through the first level of the defense and had just about 7 yards to go for the first down when he decided to punt the ball away.
Seriously:

For those that are unaware, that is illegal. Even if it were legal, one has to wonder what was going through his head with the first-down marker almost in reach and a chance to get the first down.
Either way, it will be hard to find a worse fake attempt than this, but we’ll see what the 2022 season has in store for us!
