Ohio State assistant Kerry Coombs to stay in Columbus with expanded role

Ohio State lost one key assistant on Saturday, but it didn’t lose two.
After news surfaced that defensive coordinator Luke Fickell would be going to Cincinnati to take over as head coach, there was speculation that he’d bring special teams coordinator and cornerbacks coach Kerry Coombs with him.
But Coombs isn’t going anywhere.
He made the announcement that he’s staying in Columbus:

On top of that, Coombs will take on an expanded role on the defense with Fickell off to Cincinnati. Urban Meyer made that announcement himself:

That’ll be a popular decision in Columbus. Coombs is widely regarded as one of the most well-liked coaches on OSU’s staff.
Coombs has been with the Buckeyes since Meyer took over in 2012. It appears that he’ll be with the Buckeyes well beyond 2016.
He and Fickell will both be on the sidelines on Dec. 31 when Ohio State takes on Clemson in the College Football Playoff semifinals.
