Dan Lanning is trying his best to turn the page from Oregon’s thrilling win in Week 7, but the head coach is still getting peppered with questions related to the late-game situation vs. Ohio State.

It’s nothing new with Lanning addressing the perception of an intentional penalty for 12 men on the field at his weekly press conference. In spite of that revealing response, Lanning was asked about it once again on Wednesday by Dan Patrick, but Lanning was not in the mood to dive in.

“I probably spent too much time on this on Monday and I know what answers we’re looking for here but I got my dancing shoes on this morning, Dan,” cracked Lanning, “so I’m not going to get into great depth on strategy.”

Patrick pushed back at Lanning for not talking about the situation with the radio host admitting he thought it was brilliant awareness. Lanning caved a little bit and did shed some insight into how he looks for scenarios to take advantage of as a defensive coach, but he also said he’s challenging himself to move ahead fully into Week 8 mode.

“I’ve paid attention to a lot of situations like that. I always think about the 49ers-Raiders Super Bowl and the holding penalty at the end of the game to run the clock out,” said Lanning. “I think as defensive coaches you’re always trying to find ways to take advantage of the rules that exist.

“We have an unbelievable staff; we spend a lot of time on a lot of different situations. When things are in place you want to try to be able to advantage of them. But I’ve asked my staff, I’ve asked our players: Hey Ohio State game, that was awesome, we’re on a short week. We got Purdue this week. Let’s move on to Purdue, so I’m going to challenge myself to do the same thing.”

The head coach finished the matter by admitting he knew Patrick would ask about the situation, but it sounds like its officially closed as Lanning is concerned. The same could also be said of the NCAA.

The organization quickly went into a review of the perceived loophole the Ducks utilized, and the NCAA is reportedly already planning to close that up immediately. Still, Lanning’s utilization of that loophole will go down in glory — or infamy — depending on what side of the fence you’re on.
