The regular season is slowly coming to a close, with just one more week to go before conference championship time.

But while other programs will have an extra chance to impress the College Football Playoff selection committee during championship weekend, Notre Dame will sit idle. Since the Week 5 loss to Cincinnati, the Fighting Irish have rebounded nicely, winning 6 straight. They are now No. 6 in the latest CFP rankings. With no conference championship game, they will need a lot of things to go their way to get inside the top 4.

CBS Sports’ Danny Kanell came up with an idea for how Notre Dame can make it easier on itself. He thinks No. 6 Notre Dame and No. 13 BYU should play as the 2 best independent teams so they can have a chance of moving up in the CFP rankings.

This could definitely be something to consider for the future.

No. 6 Notre Dame (10-1) finishes off the regular season against 3-8 Stanford Saturday at 8 p.m. ET on FOX.
