Danny Kanell sets expectations for Drew Allar vs. Oregon: ‘He cannot be a game-manager’

Drew Allar and the Penn State Nittany Lions play perhaps the most important game of their season Saturday night against No. 6 Oregon.
And, to put it lightly, CBS’ Danny Kanell wants to see more from the senior Penn State quarterback. On Saturday before the game, Kanell insisted that Penn State has to be more than a game manager for the Nittany Lions to pull off the win.
Here’s what he had to say:
The struggles of Penn State against top-tier competition are well-documented. Time to pull out the stat again! James Franklin is 4-20 against top 10 programs and 1-17 against top 10 teams in conference play. The Nittany Lions rarely lose to inferior competition, but they have failed to get it done time and time again against the best of the best.
That’s what Kanell wants to see more from Allar, who has been a little underwhelming against weaker competition this season. Allar has thrown for 4 touchdown passes and 626 yards on 64.8 completion percentage against the likes of Villanova, FIU and Nevada.
Obviously, Oregon presents a pretty considerable jump-up in competition. The Ducks also haven’t played great competition though – but they have been dominant in wins over Oklahoma State, Northwestern, Oregon State and Montana State.
Tonight’s game between the Ducks and Nittany Lions is set to kick off at 7:30 p.m. on NBC.
