Despite a rough start to the season for Penn State and the prospects of a big paycheck just a few months away, Nittany Lions defensive end Jayson Oweh is not going to bolt from Happy Valley.

Penn State, 0-3 after a home loss to Maryland last Saturday, is not having a great season, toppling from their preseason top 10 ranking. Oweh on Wednesday said that he doesn’t want to follow in the footsteps of other top NFL Draft prospects and forego his final season of college football.

During preseason, Penn State linebacker Micah Parsons, a consensus top 10 pick in next spring’s draft, decided to skip his junior season and head straight to training for the NFL Combine. Oweh is projected as a possible first round pick in the draft.

Oweh has had a solid year for Penn State but it is nowhere near the expectation level that was expected considering his sophomore season. Last year, he had 21 tackles and five sacks, a number that created intrigue for a breakout junior season.

This year, Oweh is on pace to surpass last season’s tackle total (he is at 18 tackles through three games) but he has yet to register a sack. He had 10 tackles in last week’s 35-19 loss to Maryland.

Oweh sticking around is good news for the struggling Nittany Lions, as is the commitment of another teammate who likely has an NFL future.

Junior tight end Pat Freiermuth said on Tuesday that he isn’t considering leaving at midseason, declaring that he is with the program through “good times and the bad.” Freiermuth has been a bright spot for Penn State this season with 16 catches for 197 yards with a touchdown.
