Derik Queen delivered the first buzzer beater of the 2025 NCAA Tournament on Sunday afternoon.
Trailing 71-70 with 3.4 seconds remaining, Maryland coach Kevin Willard decided to put the ball in Queen’s hands with the game on the line. The talented freshman responded by hitting a very tough shot at the buzzer to send the Terps to the Sweet 16.
Here’s a replay of the big shot from Queen:

Maryland had been on the receiving end of multiple buzzer-beating losses this season, including last week against Michigan in the Big Ten Tournament.
Queen scored 17 points in this game, but none bigger than that bucket to seal the win for the Terps. Colorado State did its best to limit Queen’s touches, particularly in the 2nd half, but there was nothing they could do on the final play.
It was a valiant effort for Colorado State, who was seeking its first Sweet 16 bid in decades. The Rams were led by Nique Clifford, who finished with 21 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists. Clifford also had the assist on a 3-pointer just seconds earlier to give Colorado State a 1-point lead.
Maryland will now face Florida in the Sweet 16 next week in San Francisco.
