Some people loved last week’s 9 overtime contest between Illinois and Penn State. Others hated it.
College GameDay analyst Desmond Howard appears to be in the latter category. A week after the Fighting Illini pulled off an incredible 20-18 victory in extra frames, Howard still couldn’t wait to rip both teams.
The biggest criticism of last week’s game was the final score considering the amount of time spent on the field. Howard said on Saturday morning that neither team was deserving of a victory.
“I think that game should have ended with both teams catching an ‘L,'” Howard said. “It should’ve been a tie. How can two teams play 9 overtimes and walk away with 38 points?”
Obviously, it was a bit different with the new overtime rules in effect. Teams traded 2-point conversion attempts from the 3-yard line following the second overtime period.
Still, it was a bit shocking to see the game extend to 9 overtimes with such a low scoring total. Some didn’t care too much about that final score.
Clearly, it bothered Howard.
