Despite hot start, Maryland falls behind Alabama after 1st half

Things started off well for Mark Turgeon and Maryland in Monday night’s Round of 32 matchup against Alabama, but an 11-2 run in the middle of the half from the Crimson Tide flipped the game around.
Alabama took a 46-38 advantage into the locker room, overcoming an early seven-point deficit. The Tide were led in scoring by Alex Reese off the bench, who came in and got 11 points. Jahvon Quinerly was also excellent, scoring 7 points and dishing out 9 assists, well on his way to a double-double.
Maryland’s leading scorer was Aaron Wiggins, who had 13 points through 20 minutes. Eric Ayala had 9 points and grabbed 4 rebounds as the Terrapins trail by 8.
The Terps started off hot, building an early 14-7 advantage on Alabama. The Crimson Tide were able to close the gap, and when the game was knotted at 22-22, the Tide ripped off the 11-2 run to take a 33-24 advantage. Nate Oats’ team led by as many as 11 in the first half while shooting 8-of-17 from behind the 3-point line.
Maryland’s biggest issues in the first half game on rebounding, as it was crushed on the glass 20-10. The Terrapins also did not shoot a free throw through the first 20 minutes.
