New details have emerged in the credit card fraud case involving eight Rutgers football players.
Earlier Wednesday, ex-Scarlet Knights linebacker Brenden DeVera and defensive back K.J. Gray were identified as ringleaders of a credit card fraud scam that redshirt junior LB Malik Dixon, redshirt freshman DB Naijee Jones, redshirt freshman DB Edwin Lopez, senior DB Kobe Marfo, sophomore LB C.J. Onyechi and redshirt freshman LB Syhiem Simmons also participated in.
An updated report from NJ.com notes that Simmons and Lopez are no longer on the football team, a designation the initial reports did not make. Simmons announced transfer plans earlier this month and Lopez has enrolled at Garden City Community College in Kansas.
In addition to clarifying the status of the football players, the report notes that Dixon, Lopez and Simmons also face charges of money laundering and fraudulent use of credit cards.
All players named face a charge of conspiracy to commit theft by deception.
