Dillon Johnson, Washington’s leading rusher, injured late in Sugar Bowl win

Dillon Johnson was trying to help Washington run out the clock to a Sugar Bowl win late in the fourth quarter against Texas. Unfortunately, he was injured on a 3rd-down carry, and his early status for next week’s College Football Playoff National Championship vs. Michigan is a question mark.
It was unclear what exactly the injury to Johnson involved, but he was in visible pain before being helped off the field. He was clearly favoring his right leg and not putting much weight on it after the injury.

Along with concern for Johnson’s well-being, the timing of the injury made the ending to the Sugar Bowl much more interesting than anticipated. It stopped the clock and allowed Texas to save around 30 seconds in the final minute, allowing the Longhorns to set up a goal-line stand to decide the final outcome.
Johnson was limited to 49 rushing yards in the Sugar Bowl but did punch in 2 touchdowns and is a leader for the Huskies. He led Washington with over 1,100 rushing yards this season to go with 14 touchdowns and has done a great job of balancing out the passing attack led by Michael Penix Jr.
Hopefully, Johnson is able to be healthy for next week’s CFP National Championship, but his status will be something to monitor in the week ahead.
