Minnesota head basketball coach Ben Johnson has addressed the team’s need for frontcourt depth and has added a new forward to the roster.

Over the weekend, the Golden Gophers received a verbal pledge from Division II forward Danny Ogele. He will be a graduate transfer and be able to play immediate for Minnesota during the 2021-22 campaign.

“I just want to thank God because without him I am nothing,” Ogele wrote on Twitter. “Thank you to my family, friends and coaches who stayed in my corner  and guided me through the process. I am excited to announce that I will be attending the University of Minnesota to pursue my master’s degree.”

A 6-foot-7, 220-pound forward, Ogele comes from Mercy Hurt University in Pennsylvania. Last season, he averaged 10.5 points and just under 5 rebounds per game for a team that finished with a 13-1 record.

Ogele started in all 14 games and scored in double digits 10 times.

Minnesota finished the 2020-21 season with a 14-15 record, missing the NCAA Tournament. The school parted ways with former head coach Richard Pitino and hired Johnson, a former player and assistant for the Gophers, to lead the program.
