Dug McDaniel, Michigan’s freshman point guard, started and played 26 minutes against Michigan State after being in the hospital leading up to the game. McDaniel’s resiliency was on full display when he took the court to match up against the rival Spartans despite his illness.
He revealed Wednesday the hospitalization was due to dehydration related to illness and that he didn’t “have enough fluid” in his body. He was in the hospital the morning of the Michigan State game but was discharged in time for the matchup.
McDaniel was a highly-rated recruit from Paul VI Catholic and ranked among the nation’s Top 100 players per the 247 Sports Composite. Recruiting insiders noted his overall speed and quickness made him a difficult player to stop.
McDaniel would earn his first start against Minnesota in December and has played in 15 games so far. Against the Golden Gophers, McDaniel would score 15 points with that currently being his career best.
For those 26 minutes against the Spartans, McDaniel would make his presence felt by recording 4 assists and 4 rebounds. Ultimately Michigan would fall short 59-53 with a great second half offensively scoring 35 points.
McDaniel will continue to evolve into a key piece of this Wolverine squad as the season continues.
