Out for the season with a torn ACL suffered in August, Michigan Wolverines junior offensive tackle Andrew Stueber is ahead of schedule in his rehab, according to offensive line coach Ed Warinner.

“He’s (Stueber) on schedule, ahead of schedule,” Warinner began.

“The first couple of months he was just basically doing rehab full-time down there. He’s in there twice a day, maybe more, but he’ll come in and he sits in the meetings and is staying engaged in the football part.”

The Ann Arbor News shared an article from Aaron McMann of MLive containing further comments from Warinner:

Appearing in 11 games with two starts in 2018, Stueber was competing with sophomore Jalen Mayfield for the starting right tackle job when he suffered the injury. Holding down the fort, Mayfield has started each of Michigan’s eight games.

There is news on another lineman with an eye on 2020, as well. Redshirt sophomore Chuck Filiaga has been taking reps at left guard with the second-team in practice, and, if all goes well, looks to be on track to be the starter next season.

“He controls his future,” Warinner stated of Filiaga.

“He has a lot of ability … Very likable kid. Has some gifts; has some things he needs to work on as well. But that’s the thing about Chuck – he’s not afraid of working.”

Contributing on special teams throughout the season, Filiaga has seen time on the offensive line in three games. He saw snaps at left guard in the season-opening win over Middle Tennessee State on August 31 and in the victory over Notre Dame on October 26; Filiaga also appeared at right guard in the Rutgers win on September 28.

Getting back to Warinner, the 57-year-old coach will receive the Duke Barrett Award of Excellence from his alma mater, University of Mount Union, on Friday night.

Playing for the Purple Raiders from 1979-83, Warinner began his career in coaching as the Akron Zips’ running backs coach in 1984. Following one year with Akron, he spent two years (1985-86) as the linebackers/defensive backs coach at Michigan State.

Moving around to three different schools between stops, Warinner returned to the B1G as Illinois’ offensive line coach/run game coordinator in 2005. Coaching under Urban Meyer at Ohio State, he was a member of the Buckeyes’ national champion team in 2014.

In his second season in Ann Arbor, Warinner joined Jim Harbaugh’s staff in 2018.

No. 14 Michigan (6-2) will travel to College Park to battle the Maryland Terrapins (3-5) on Saturday at 12:00PM ET on ABC.
