Bowling Green had an opening when Scot Loeffler decided to leave his post as the program’s head coach to become quarterbacks coach for the Philadelphia Eagles. Per The Blade, George, UMass offensive coordinator Mike Bajakian, and Oklahoma State quarterbacks coach Kevin Johns were the 3 finalists interviewed Friday at the Westin at Detroit Metro Airport.
George, 51, heads for the FBS ranks after his best season in the FCS ranks. Tennessee State posted a 9-4 record last season, making the FCS playoffs for the first time in his 4-season tenure. TSU won the Big South-OVC and George was named the conference’s Coach of the Year. The Tigers were 24-22 in 4 seasons under George.
George played college football at Ohio State from 1992-95 and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2011. He had a successful professional career, playing for the Houston Oilers/Tennessee Titans franchise from 1996-2003, before a final season with the Dallas Cowboys in 2004.
Tennessee State was George’s first coaching job.
