ESPN’s FPI predicts outcome of College Football Playoff

ESPN’s FPI is predicting the outcome of the College Football Playoff and the national championship winner with the final field established.
On Sunday, Michigan was unveiled as the nation’s No. 1 seed with Washington, Texas and Alabama following behind. The No. 4 seed was particularly up for a heated debate with undefeated Florida State getting left out of the field. Georgia — defending national champs and previously No. 1 — was also left out of the field.
Heading into the Playoff, the FPI has a clear favorite to hoist the trophy as national champs. That distinction belongs to Jim Harbaugh’s program with a better than 36% chance to win it all.
For anyone looking at a longshot to win the title, Washington is not highly regarded by the system. The FPI gives the Huskies less than a 10% chance to win it all.
Here is the CFP field ranked by the FPI’s odds of winning it all:
- Michigan — 36.2%
- Texas — 28.8%
- Alabama — 26.7%
- Washington — 8.3%
The CFP semifinals will be played on New Year’s Day. Michigan and Alabama will face off in the Rose Bowl with Texas vs. Washington set for a nightcap in the Sugar Bowl.
Will Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide win another title, or will the CFP have a new face to crown as national champion this season?
