ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI) has been updated after a wild Week 1 of college football action.
FPI predicts the outcomes of every game each week, including the upcoming matchup between Boise State and Oregon. The formula strongly favors the Ducks in this matchup, giving Oregon a 79.9% chance to win the game. This means the Broncos are getting just a 20.1% chance to begin 2024 with a 2-0 record. Both of these teams came away with Week 1 victories, but the talent disparity is undeniable.
The Ducks struggled with the FCS Idaho Vandals, but Dillon Gabriel still managed to throw for 380 yards and 2 touchdowns while completing 41 of 49 passes. Terrance Ferguson and Tez Johnson combined for 19 catches for 168 yards and 2 TDs.
On defense, the Ducks played about as expected. Idaho QB Jack Layne completed less than half of his passes and ended with 168 yards, 1 TD, and 1 INT. The Ducks ended up holding the Vandals to just 217 total yards of offense.
While it wasn’t pretty, the Ducks escaped with a 24-14 victory in Week 1. The Broncos, meanwhile, took part in one of the weekend’s highest-scoring games.
Star RB Ashton Jeanty rushed 20 times for 267 yards and a whopping 6 TDs. Maddux Madsen threw for 280 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT. Ultimately, the Broncos compiled 651 total yards of offense and showcased why some picked the Broncos to make the 12-team College Football Playoff this season as the top Group of 5 program.
In the FPI rankings, the Ducks tumbled 8 spots after the close game with Idaho. Meanwhile, the Broncos jumped 10 spots after the impressive offensive output in Week 1.
The Ducks and Broncos will kick off on September 7 at 7:00 p.m. PT.
