In a college football season that has been as unpredictable as any, former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer talked about addressing the issues within a program when things are heading in the wrong direction.
A number of powerhouse programs have had early season struggles to date.
The likes of Penn State (0-3) and LSU (2-3) as well as Michigan (0-3) have struggled this year, disappointing records to go along with some rough losses. In the case of the two Big Ten teams, the winless starts to the season have led to fan unrest as well as talk about the possible need for changes at head coach.
Meyer said that teams need to “look under the hood” and fans as well as the media shouldn’t panic so much. It may not be a coaching or personnel issues.
“I get sick of hearing that. I don’t think it’s the players, I don’t think it’s the coaches,” Meyer said on FOX’s pregame show on Saturday according to CoachTube. “There is something wrong, lift the hood.”

Meyer highlighted trust issues, a dysfunctional work environment or a selfish team as things that could drag a program down. He zeroed in on a team’s drive to improve, saying that “Work ethic must meet or exceed.”
He also preached against knee jerk reactions to what might be seen on the field.
“So many of us are excuse makers and that’s part of who we are and it shouldn’t be that way,” Meyer said. “When you see a team struggle, the first thing the fans and the media blame are the players or they blame the coaches.”
