Sean Clifford has a tall task ahead of him. The shoes he’s been left to fill might be larger than Shaquille O’Neal’s size 22s.
What Trace McSorley did for Penn State in his three years as a starter was really impressive. He shattered records, won a lot of games and led the Nittany Lions to a B1G title in 2016. If Penn State got anything close to that type of production out of Clifford, it would be a very dangerous team.
Former Georgia quarterback did have some advice for Clifford, though. And while McSorley will be considered one of the most beloved figured in State College for a long time, Clifford should still try to be himself, Murray advises.
“Sean is not going to be the flashy, make plays with his feet type of guy like Trace. But, you also have to have your own identity. There are two things, one is leadership and the other is identity,” Murray told CBS Philadelphia. “Don’t try to be the guy that came before you. If you’re not a runner, don’t try to go out there trying to be a runner just because that is what everybody is so used to seeing with Penn State football.”

Clifford’s playing time has been sparse, appearing in four games last season for the Nittany Lions. He threw just seven passes, completing five for 195 yards and two touchdowns.
No, he may not have the same mobility and skillset as McSorley, but there is plenty of excitement about his ability to run the Penn State offense. As long as he doesn’t get caught up in trying to replicate McSorley, he should be just fine.
