A former Maryland defensive lineman will be making his next appearance in court, rather than on the football field.

Joseph Boletepeli, who played for NC State in 2018 and 2019, was arrested on charges of misdemeanor stalking and communicating threats to Wolfpack head coach Dave Doeren. Allegedly, Boletepeli sent text a text message saying “Imma get him I promise. Dave Doeren and the rest.”

According to court records, Boletepeli’s message “would cause a reasonable person to suffer substantial emotional distress by placing that person in fear of death, bodily injury or the safety of the person’s immediate family.” In addition to the threatening text messages sent to Doeren, Boletepeli also allegedly showed up several times to Doeren’s place of work and sent harassing messages to other staff members at the school.

Boletepeli left NC State in 2020 as a transfer to Maryland. The former 3-star recruit played in five games for the Terrapins in 2020, but did not appear on the roster in 2021.

According to WRAL which first broke the news, Boletepeli remains free with an ankle monitor after posting a $25,000 bond.
