Former Michigan State basketball player Keith Appling has been arrested in connection to a fatal shooting that happened Saturday night near Detroit. The Detroit Free Press reported the news on Monday morning.

Appling was named a suspect in the fatal shooting over the weekend. He was arrested without incident on Monday and a firearm was recovered at the time of the arrest.

According to the Detroit Police Department, Appling was in an altercation with a man before allegedly firing multiple gun shots and fleeing the scene in a tan-colored Buick Regal. A 66-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Appling played for the Spartans from 2011-14. During his four-year career, he averaged 10.6 points, 3.3 assists and 3.0 rebounds per contest.

Appling got a brief chance in the NBA, playing in five games for the Orlando Magic in 2016. He went 2-for-8 from the floor, scoring six points and committing five fouls in his short-lived NBA career.

This is not Appling’s first run-in with the law. According to the Detroit Free Press, he was sentenced to one year in jail in 2017 for carrying a concealed weapon and resisting and obstructing a police officer in Wayne County. In 2019, he was sentenced to 18 months of probation after officers found heroin in his vehicle during a traffic stop.
