Ex-Michigan walk-on sets FCS record with 10 passing TDs in season opener

One former Wolverine had a record-setting day in his FCS debut.
The player is Ren Hefley, a former walk-on quarterback that spent two seasons in Ann Arbor with Jim Harbaugh’s squad. Hefley did not see action during the 2019 or 2020 seasons but was twice named Scout Team Player of the Week.
Hefley transferred to Presbyterian College in the offseason, and he made his Blue Hose debut Saturday afternoon. He did his part, slinging 10 touchdowns in the game. That is an FCS record.
Hefley’s full stat line reads like a Madden box score: 538 yards passing on 38 completions without an interception. His 10 touchdowns were 1 away from the FBS record of 11 set in 1991. PC beat St. Andrews by a final score of 84-43.

All of this was made possible by the radical approach of new PC coach Kevin Kelley. Kelley’s coaching philosophy almost always calls for an onside kick and he rarely punts. One game in, his radical model is producing radical results.
