Ex-Nebraska head coach appointed interim for Washington Redskins

A former Nebraska head coach is calling the shots again, but this time on an interim basis.
On Monday morning, NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reported that the Washington Redskins fired head coach Jay Gruden following the team’s 0-5 start. Former Nebraska and Oakland Raiders head coach Bill Callahan will take over the duties as head coach on an interim basis.
The decision comes after Washington dropped a 33-7 decision to the New England Patriots on Sunday. Callahan was serving as the assistant head coach and offensive line coach. He has been with the franchise since 2015.

Callahan has not been a head coach since 2007, when he was terminated at Nebraska. He coached the Huskers from 2004-07, posting a 27-22 overall mark and a 15-17 record in Big 12 play. He led Nebraska to two bowl games.
Prior to being the head coach at Nebraska, Callahan was the head coach of the Raiders from 2002-03. His first season, Oakland finished with an 11-5 record. The next year the team was 4-12.
Since leaving Nebraska in 2007, Callahan has strictly been in the NFL. He was the assistant head coach and offensive line coach for the New York Jets from 2008-11 and the Dallas Cowboys as the offensive line coach and offensive coordinator from 2012-14.
Washington’s next game will be on the road against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.
