Ex-Purdue forward Aaron Wheeler transferring to Big East program

Former Purdue forward Aaron Wheeler has found a new home. He’s leaving the B1G for the Big East.
Thursday, Wheeler announced that he has committed to St. John’s. His decision comes after putting his name into the NCAA transfer portal following the 2020-21 college basketball season. Wheeler spent four seasons at Purdue.
“Excited to join the St. John’s family,” Wheeler tweeted.
Wheeler was a 3-star member of Purdue’s 2017 recruiting class. He redshirted his first year with the Boilermakers and played significantly in the following three seasons. During the 2020-21 campaign, Wheeler appeared in 28 games and averaged over 18 minutes per contest. He posted 4.4 rebounds, 3.9 points and 1 assist per game.
During his career at Purdue, Wheeler appeared in 95 career games and averaged 4.1 points and 3.8 boards. He brought great athleticism to the floor and provided a spark for Matt Painter’s team off the bench throughout his career.
But with Purdue have a plethora of talented young players on the roster, Wheeler was not able to carve out a starting role consistently. Over the last two seasons, Wheeler started in 14 contests.
Wheeler joins a St. John’s team that finished 16-11 last season with a 10-9 record in Big East play.
