When Penn State takes the field for its game against Ball State this weekend, it’ll have three honorary captains to remember one of its own.
Patrick Dwyer graduated from Penn State in 1986 and was the Nittany Lions’ backup kicker. He was one of the victims in the 9/11 attacks, working on the 105th floor of the World Trade Center’s North Tower.
This Saturday — on the 20th anniversary of that horrible day — Dwyer’s son, mom and sister will serve as honorary captains for the Nittany Lions’ game against Ball State at Beaver Stadium.
Before the tragic events of 9/11, Patrick Dwyer had been planning to take his six y/o son, Brendan, to his first Penn State game.
This Saturday, Brendan, his mom & sister, will serve as honorary captains at our home opener on the 20th anniversary of 9/11.

At the time, Dwyer was getting ready to take his son, Brendan, to his first Penn State game. Twenty years later, Brendan, now 26, will be on the field as a captain alongside his aunt and grandmother.
The game between Penn State and Ball State is set for Sept. 11 at 3:30 p.m. ET on FS1.
