It might be the end of the Lovie Smith error in Illinois…sorry, era…the Illini head coach seeing another lopsided loss. Illinois is now 2-5 after a 28-10 loss at Northwestern.
At least basketball season is here, right?
In their fifth season under Smith, Illinois hasn’t had a winning record under the former NFL head coach during that time. It is part of a bad run for the program as the Illini hasn’t a winning season – period – since 2010 under Ron Zook.
Smith spent 11 years in the NFL as a head coach before returning to his roots in college. His lost two seasons were as head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he had an 8-24 record.
Needless to say, fan reaction to the official Twitter account for the Illinois football team was, well…not kind:

Lovie Smith blames Nebraska, because they are the ones who brought back Big Ten football.

Lovie is a great guy. But, these young men deserve a coach who can bring success for the team and its players. He was given more than enough time. Our most talented team will be leaving and recruiting has gotten no better. Time to move on.

It felt like a bigger score than that.

Awaiting post-game interview where Lovie points out all the positives in the game and the strides we made today. (Bangs head against the wall again…)
