Fans and media shared a wide range of opinions on Ohio State’s placement in the updated College Football Playoff rankings, which were revealed on Tuesday night.
The Buckeyes came in at No. 6, falling four spots after their loss to Michigan in Ann Arbor in Week 13. Ohio State fell behind Michigan, Washington, Florida State and Oregon with the loss.
However, Ohio State does remain above a pair of other CFP hopefuls in Texas and Alabama. Both the Longhorns and Crimson Tide have one loss going into their respective conference championship games this weekend.
The reaction for Ohio State’s ranking was all over the map. Some thought having Ohio State as high as No. 6 was not justifiable given the Buckeyes’ lack of an opponent this weekend as Michigan and Iowa will battle for the Big Ten crown.
ESPN’s Greg McElroy was amongst those who made the case that Ohio State is ranked too high this week.
Others believe, despite the loss to the Wolverines, that Ohio State shouldn’t have fallen below a Florida State team that is playing without starting quarterback Jordan Travis for the rest of the season.
Here’s the best of the reaction to Ohio State’s No. 6 ranking:
Ohio State dropping from 2 all the way down to 6… BELOW OREGON… after losing by 1 possession on the road vs the now #2 team in the country… is ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS. If Georgia or Alabama were in the same spot in a given season, they would’ve slid about 1 spot. Not FOUR spots.

Wow, Ohio State fell all the way to No. 6. I thought it would be 4 or 5.
They're not going to move back up 2 spots without playing. They're done.

If Ohio State somehow Mickey Mouse’s their way back into the CFP again I’m literally going to lose it.

So basically, Ohio State just needs
1. Georgia to beat Alabama
2. Oklahoma State to beat Texas
3. Louisville to beat Florida State pic.twitter.com/YhiIiKw1j5— Gabe Hoyer (@GabeHoyer) November 29, 2023
Ohio State being ranked above Texas while not even playing in a conference championship is hilarious. I hate it here. https://t.co/WkC36FmOkx

Ohio State is getting jumped by #Texas once they’re officially Big12 Champs.
Pls stop worrying about them. They’re irrelevant.

Not sure why Ohio State is at 6. They have no shot. They’re clearly a placeholder, why not go ahead and move them down lol

Ohio State and Oregon ahead of Texas is nasty business.
The CFP is a bunch of busters.
