It’s only April, but SEC Network’s Paul Finebaum isn’t holding back on the state of Nebraska’s football program and its fanbase. During Monday morning’s RoundTable on WJOX, the longtime college football voice had some harsh comments on the Huskers.

Nebraska is just 12-20 under head coach Scott Frost in his first three seasons at the helm and hasn’t reached a bowl game. Finebaum was asked if the Huskers could ever return to their blueblood status in college football.

His response was brutally honest.

“I don’t think they can. And I did when (Scott Frost) got there. To me, he was the coach of the future. Sometimes you just have missed your moment. Nebraska is like a lot of these software companies or computer companies of the 90s, they just never change,” Finebaum said. “The problem with Nebraska, too, is the fanbase. They are a loyal fanbase, but they’re also a delusional fanbase. They still think it’s 1980, they still think it’s 1990, they still think it’s 2000.

“They’ve had pockets of success. I know. Every time I talk about Nebraska I get the Big Red Machine coming after me. I think you just might as well say a prayer for this program and put it to bed because it’s not coming back.”

There’s no question Frost and his staff face some pressure to at least hit the six-win mark in the 2021 season and get the program back to bowl eligibility. The Huskers were close to getting their in 2019, but finished 5-7 with a season-ending loss to Iowa.

Last year, Nebraska was 3-5 with wins over Penn State, Purdue and Rutgers.

Nebraska is scheduled to host its annual spring game at Memorial Stadium on Saturday, May 1. The Huskers open the season with a Week 0 game against Illinois in Champaign on Aug. 28.
