Former B1G commissioner Jim Delany lands new job in college sports

Former Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany is back in collegiate athletics.
According to the Sports Business Journal’s John Ourand, Delany is joining a sports consultancy company called The Montag Group.
It’s based in New York and is hoping to have a role as college athletics jumps into the Name, Image and Likeness era.
“Given our years of experience, the relationships that we’ve built over decades, I just saw an opportunity to help institutions and conferences,” Sandy Montag said, via 247Sports. “I think the world of Jim. There’s really no one that’s not in his Rolodex. I saw a green light.
“We know that it’s a crowded space to some extent. But we feel what the two of us bring to the table, combined with what my company’s doing in the consulting world, there’s a good space for us. There’s really no one in college sports that either one of us can’t reach.”
Delany retired from his role as Big Ten commissioner on Jan. 1, 2020. He began that job in 1989.
“I was attracted to the fact that Sandy’s got a company up and going because I wasn’t interested in starting a company, but I was interested in partnering with Sandy,” Delany said, via 247Sports. “Sometimes you can do certain things by yourself effectively. Sometimes, if a project is bigger or requires more expertise, having a partner is the best way forward.”
Widespread Name, Image, Likeness legislation is expected over the coming months.
